Business Etiquette
According to research by the Harvard Business Review, workplace rudeness has become increasingly prevalent, with a significant rise in incivility, which is synonymous with rudeness, disrespect, and worker frustration. Previously, around 50% of employees reported experiencing rudeness at least once a month, but that number has now surged to 76% post-pandemic. According to Christine Porath, the renowned author of the Harvard study and Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace, increased exposure to rudeness leads to decreased motivation, causing employees to reduce their effort and resulting in lower levels of employee engagement. Moreover, individuals who experience frequent rudeness are more inclined to leave an organization compared to those in less disrespectful environments.
To address this issue, it is crucial to change the conversation around workplace behavior and cultivate a culture of civility and respect. This can be achieved through awareness campaigns, training programs, and promoting positive interpersonal dynamics. When confronted with rude behavior, insults, or similar challenges, it is important to develop strategies such as remaining calm, setting boundaries, seeking support, and fostering open communication to adapt effectively and maintain personal well-being.
